As his first solo effort “Crown Of Thorns” drops these days, we discussed with Rakaa why it took him so long to record an album, where his inspiration comes from, what the cover art stands for, the LA graffiti scene and in the end he strikes a blow for Hip-hop artists from East Asia.

In a new interview with Blackbook magazine M.I.A.’s producer Diplo talks about the less than warm receptions she’s been getting on her new album MAYA:
On what went wrong with MAYA:
“I think she’s a really controversial artist and she’s one of the most important people doing music right now, because people expect a lot. And I think that the record was like—she didn’t care about it. I was in the studio with her, she didn’t write anything. The one good review is that, at least people—she’s on the defensive for the whole record, and that doesn’t sound very authentic. Me and Switch tried our best to be quality control of the record and she didn’t want that. She kind of went on her own way.”
On the backlash:
“I am surprised by it. She like, retired because she married a dude and she didn’t care about music. She only did it again because “Paper Planes” did blow up in the end. It gave her a second wind, but she didn’t have any hunger anymore. She already got a full table.”
We’re pretty sure M.I.A. wants to keep coming out of left field….
So on Monday, Pusha leaked a freestyle off his upcoming Fear Of God solo mixtape with a “9.14.10″ promo pic, coincidentally suspiciously the same date as G.O.O.D. Music Day.
MTV asked him about that date’s significance:
“A great day for music, but it’s a good day,” he said, slyly repeating the word. “I mean, you know. I been to Hawaii. Hawaii is a nice place. Good music is made down there, ya know. So, yeah, I was there. I can’t say too much about that. I think everybody’s gonna be in for a big surprise. A very big surprise.”
